• Latency. Finding and removing delay and jitter across networks, hosts and applications.
• Order paths. Order management, gateways and market-data handling where correctness is everything.
• Risk controls. Pre-trade checks and real-time limits that have to be fast and dependable.
• Tooling. Test, replay and monitoring tools, including AI-assisted ones.

• Strong systems programming in a language such as C++, Rust or Java.
• A solid grasp of Linux and networking.
• The habit of measuring before optimising, and writing things down.
• Experience in trading technology helps, but curiosity and rigour matter more.
